Paiste Line "Traditional"
Paiste has undertaken a remarkable
historical research project aimed at accurately re-creating the "lost"
cymbal sounds of the 40's-50's-60's era, the Golden Age of Blues, Jazz,
Big Band, and Be-Bop.
Researched in loving detail and tested by drummers noted
for their historical expertise, the new "Traditional" collection - four
models of Rides, as well as Hi-Hat, Splash, China, Crash and Swish
cymbals - makes the rich sounds of history, from sizzling Big Band
swing and Jazz to the smoky intensity of Bop and Blues available today.
Unlike the fragile vintage instruments from those times,
the new "Traditional" cymbals offer the unique range, versatility of
expression, and reliable durability offered by Paiste's patented "Sound
Alloy", the state-of-the-art bronze compound from which they are
crafted. These new instruments will especially delight collectors,
connoisseurs and lovers of traditional cymbal sound.

The "bare" visual aesthetic of the Paiste "Traditional" models is
another commitment to authenticity, recreating the simple, unadorned
profile of cymbals from bygone eras. A small concession to modern
times, the size and model of each particular cymbal is subtly
silk-screened underneath the bell.

Effects
- Thin Splash (9", 11")
- The
Thin Splash has a sweet, soft almost "papery" attack and a quick decay.
It is very responsive, opens immediately, and is very suitable for
quick "choke" stops. When lightly struck with the shoulder of the
stick, you hear a warm, pretty spreading sound.
- Medium Light China (14", 16", 18")
- The
Medium Light China is very dark, short and earthy, with just enough
"trashy" quality. It is a very "oriental" and exotic sounding china
that works extremely well for repeated quarter note ride patterns.
- Medium Light Swish (20", 22")
- The
Medium Light Swish has a soft attack and provides a beautiful, dark
cushion to ride on. The stick sound is dark and sizzly. Crashed at the
edge, it gives a "swishhh" or "cawhhh" sound that is smooth, delicate
and warm.
- Medium Swish China (20")
- Similar
to the Medium Light Swish, the Medium Swich China is also well suited
to light ride patterns, but with a more exotic sound quality. It is
literally a combination of both cymbals. When struck on the edge, the
result is a more aggressive "barking" sound
Hi-Hats
- Medium Light Hi-Hat (13", 14", 15")
- The
Medium Light hi-hat is very soft and sensitive with a dark, slightly
"wet" stick sound and a silvery, fragile chick. The open/closed sound
is full, warm and dry. It reacts quickly to changes in footwork.
Crashes
- Extra Thin (14", 15", 16", 17", 18")
- The
Extra Thin is a very dark, intimate sounding cymbal. It's moody
character envelops the listener with a pleasing sound atmosphere. The
sustain is short and perfect for lower, more subtle volume situations
and reacts immediately, even with the tip of the stick. It's low pitch
and giving feel also makes it a beautiful cymbal for mallet rolls. All
in all, a beautiful cymbal for light, sensitive playing.
- Thin Crash (14", 15", 16", 17", 18")
- The
Thin Crash is very warm, soft and low in pitch. It reacts beautifully
to light, glancing blows, offering a sound that is dark, transparent
and "windy". A responsive, musical crash with a short sustain for low
to medium volume situations. The overall sound appearance is dark,
thin, and "smokey".
Rides
- Light Flat Ride (18", 20")
- The
Light Flat Ride does what one would expect from a flat ride very
controllable with no build up.The difference is that it possesses the
beautiful sound atmosphere of the Traditionals. The result is a pretty,
sizzling ping that floats over a smoky, breath-like sound.
- Light Ride (20", 22")
- The
Light Ride is low pitched and has a soft, buttery feel to it. When
riding it, the ping, being of a woody yet softly sparkling quality,
melts into a complex, dark, somewhat smokey cushion of sound. It opens
beautifully with the shoulder of the stick and fades quickly, making
room for each stick stroke. The quick decay after strong crashes makes
it easily controllable. The overall sound appearance is a dark cloud of
sound that softly surrounds you.
- Thin Ride (20")
- The
Thin Ride is low pitched and has a soft, giving feel to it. The ping
has wood in it, with a mellow sparkling quality, and floats on a thin,
low, soft, "breath-like" cushion of sound. Although it opens easily
with the shoulder of the stick and fades quickly, it is more quiet and
subdued. The quick decay after strong crashes makes it easily
controllable and forgiving. The overall sound appearance is an intimate
warm breeze and a smooth, subtle ping.
- Medium Light Ride (20", 22")
- The
Medium Light Ride has a controlled, medium pitched character. It has a
sweet ping, slightly more pronounced then the Light and Thin Ride,
while still riding softly over a warm cushion of sound. You can really
hear "air" in this cymbal. When crashed, the result is dark and soft
with a short decay. It has good flexibility and is easily controllable.
The overall sound appearance reminds one of a "subtle, hoarse voice".
- Medium Ride (20")
- The
Medium Ride has a clear defined, sizzling, silvery, yet soft stick
sound. The harmonics are of a rather dense and dry, controlled quality.
The overall sound appearance could be described as "misty", "foggy"
with a sweet "frosty" stick sound.
- Medium Heavy Ride (20")
- The
Medium Heavy Ride is an extension of the Traditional Medium Ride, with
more mass and weight to it. With a very clear, defined stick sound and
a "meatier" overall quality, this cymbal is well suited for stronger
articulation. It is a very controllable cymbal. Despite its thickness,
the Medium Heavy Ride still features a light warm wash.
