Paiste Sound Formula
Sound Formula cymbals are the newest
series to be made from the famous "Paiste Sound Alloy", the patented
bronze we invented specifically for creating cymbal sounds.
These instruments work well in live and studio
settings that require cymbals with an "attitude". They are the perfect
instruments for drummers and percussionists who consider themselves to
be "expressive artists" on the cutting edge of modern music.
The sound character of these cymbals is fresh, contemporary - even experimental - with brilliance and vigorous articulation.
With Sound Formula, Paiste not only sets the standard for progressive
professional cymbal sound, but also creates a vehicle for our ongoing
quest for original and unusual sounds. We are currently exploring the
trends towards increased interest for small sounds, exotic timbres and
"traditional' models with unusual harmonics.

Some examples of the innovative character of the Sound Formula series
include small sounds (6" Splash, 12" Thin China), exotic timbres (13"
Mega Cup Chime, 12" Flanger Bell), and cymbals with unusual harmonics
and functions (16" Crystal Crash, 10" Micro Hat). Even if your main set
doesn't consist of Sound Formulas, this is the perfect cymbal line to
draw from to complement your personal creativity.

Effects
- Splash (6", 8", 10", 12")
- A
piercing, crispy splash that explodes like breaking glass. Thin enough
for lighter glancing blows and strong enough for quick punctuation.
- Flanger Bell (12")
- A
small yet relatively thick cymbal, producing a shattering crash attack.
It's interesting decay produces a "drone" effect as it modulates and
whirls through various harmonics.
- Mega Cup Chime (13")
- A
large, thick cup chime with a large, dry bell sound. This very special
effect produces a clear piercing tone with a wide range of exotic
overtones.
- Thin China (12", 14", 16", 18", 20")
- Thin
and sensitive. Very nice for quick, trashy accents and well suited for
low to medium volume levels. Also very nice for mallet rolls.
Hi-Hats
- Micro Hat (8", 10", 12")
- A tight, warm and funky hi-hat, with a very crisp "chick" and articulate stick sound. Works as an auxiliary or main hi-hat.
- Medium Heavy Hi-Hat (12", 13", 14")
- With
a heavy bottom and fairly thin top, the result is a tight, silvery
chick and precise stick sound on top. Reacts instantly to the player's
touch.
- Sound Edge Hi-Hat (14")
- A
very cutting, sharp sounding Sound Edge hi-hat, with a clean stick
sound and high pitched wash. For moderate to loud situations.
- Heavy Hi-Hat (13", 14")
- Like
the Medium Heavy, these have the tight, silvery, warm sound but with
more power. An excellent recording and live hi-hat, adaptable to many
musical styles.
Crashes
- Thin Crash (14", 15", 16", 17", 18")
- Medium
pitch, very crisp and fast reacting with a short sustain. Opens up
quick after contact, this crash is excellent for low to moderate volume
levels.
- Crystal Crash (14", 16", 18")
- The
bell has a flattened top, giving it an unusual sound spectrum. A soft
attack followed by a warm, crystal-like crash. Short sustain,
controllable, also nice for light riding.
- Full Crash (14", 15", 16", 17",18", 20")
- A
medium weight crash that has a full, crisp sound with a warm,
shimmering feeling. A great all purpose crash able to adapt to all
styles.
- Power Crash (16", 17", 18", 20")
- A powerful, explosive crash that has a glassy quality and a longer sustain than the other Sound Formula crashes.
Rides
- Flat Ride (20")
- This
Flat Ride has characteristics reminiscent of both 2002 and Signature.
It contains warmth, a silvery ping and good projection. A nice,
alternate ride sound.
- Silk Crash Ride (20")
- With
a flattened top bell, the sound is very controllable, with a "rustling
of silk" effect. When crashed with the stick's shoulder, a snapping
crash fades quickly, giving way to ride patterns.
- Full Ride (20")
- An
all purpose ride with fullness, good stick definition accompanied by a
rich wash underneath. Bell is clear and cutting. Ideal for many
applications.
- Dry Ride (20")
- Dry
Ride's stick sound is very centered, clean, controllable. Higher
pitched than the Full Ride, almost with the feel of a Flat Ride with a
bell.
- Heavy Ride (20")
- A
strong, lively, energizing sound, with cutting, projecting ping. Pitch
is lower than Power Ride and applicable to high volume situations.
- Power Ride (20")
- Bright,
clear and powerful, with a very sharp bell that cuts through any volume
level. Very lively overtones, but not overpowering the stick sound.
